What Were You Thinking, Pat?

I was very troubled when I heard of Pat Robertson's comments about Hugo Chavez the other day. I certainly share the TV evangelist's views on Chavez, and am always worried when I see the Lula administration in Brazil making overtures to the Venezuelan dictator. However, a Christian leader calling for his assassination is way, way over the top.

I came accross article by Al Mohler today--via Pyromaniac--which calls for Robertson to repent and retract his statement. I agree.

Let us keep things in perspective, however. Here is a list of some statements made by Hugo Chavez:

At the Conference of the Americas, I’m going to sneak up on him [Bush] real quiet and shout BOO!

Hugo Chavez, speaking at the Tribunal Against Imperialism. (hat tip Chase Me...)

A model of participatory democracy

This is how he describes Gaddafi's Lybia. (Source: Times Online)

I cannot marry Condolencia (condolence), because I am much too busy. I have heard she dreams about me.

He is here referring to Condoleezza Rice, an apparent fixation of his. He has also called her an illiterate. (Source: Times Online)

This election won't be between me and other candidates. This will be between me and George Bush.

Hugo Chavez on the December 2006 presidential elections, according to Bloomberg, July 11, 2005. (Source: Latin Business Chronicle) I was unaware that George W. Bush was planning on running for president in Venezuela. Chavez also used a very obscene word to refer to Bush recently. Interesting that there have been no calls for him to appologize.

A good overview of the Chavez administration can be found here.
